Daybook of Allyn M. Mather of Windsor, CT, 1830-1839 |
Belden, George |
1830 |
1839 |
Entries in this account book are dated from Jan. 1,
1830- June 10, 1839. There appears to be three
distinct sections to the records. In the first part
of the book, beginning on January 1 until the end of
March, 1830, the entries record regular transactions
for the sale of a wide range of dry goods, food,
liquor, and general merchandise. Many familiar
Windsor, CT names are found including Levi Hayden,
Jasper Morgan, Eliakim Marshall, Henry A. Sill, and
William Pierson. The second portion of the journal
details work that was done for other people and the
amount the man was paid for each job. The author
took in boarders, did haying and fencing, and cared
for family members. The final two pages include
inventories of personal goods that were stored at
five separate houses in Windsor in the spring of
1839. The author recorded quite a bit of work for
Increase Mather, both outdoor chores and personal
care, and referred to him as 'uncle.' An entry on
Feb. 24, 1837 is followed by the signature Allyn M.
Mather, one of his nephews. Additional research has
found that Allyn Mather owned the property at 306
Broad St., Windsor and was in business variously by
himself and with partners selling dry goods,
hardware, crockery, groceries and country produce.
Notice of an auction to dispose of the entire stock
of Mather's store was published in the Connecticut
Courant on Mar. 23, 1830. Additional research
evidence helps attribute the account book to Allyn
M. Mather. |

M. Mather. |

1840 |
Account book of Edward Griswold. 1785-1840's. 8.25"
x 13" x 2" extremely worn leather covers with
embossed border-front and back covers each have a
hole in the leather appearing that some type of seal
has been removed, pages have water marks with a seal
and others have the mark "N. Patten". Writting on
cover is badly worn but appears to say "Edward
Griswold Book". Writing on the back is hard to
decipher, pages in the front of the book have been
cut out - tabbed letters "F" through "Q" are now at
the beginning, further along in the book more pages
have been removed. Handwritten entries 1785-1820's
plus a few later entries to the early 1840's.
Entries are not necessarily in chronological order.
They refer to farm work and products and also to
services, like planting. There is an account for
Mary Hooker, probably the daughter of Dr. Chaffee. |

gold on maroon leather on spine, marbled covered
pages, entries from 1849 - 1876. Records of goods

Town of Windsor: "1858 - For seven days appraising
buildings and lands in various parts of town", and
"For services as Accessor". There are also entries
for: highway taxes, school taxes and house rents.
The last notation in the book is "William Phelps

to the usual Windsor/Poquonock names it is
interesting to see Irish names, like Patrick Faylon,

are made concerning the hiring of people with Irish
surnames.) This book probably belonged to Eli

Daybook of Allyn M. Mather of Windsor, CT, 1830-1839 |
Fish, Jonathan |
1830 |
M. Mather. |

Griswold, Origen |

This account book was used by both Abiel Griswold
and his son Origen (who started using it on March
10, 1814). It records the transactions of a farmer
and his customers, with debits on the left and

sold liquor and vegetables and loaned money as well.
The first page of the book has a family record,
listing births and deaths. Abiel Griswold, Esq. born
7/14/1755, married Huldah Griswold born 11/15/1755
and they had eight children. Abiel died 12/26/1813
and Huldah died 8/16/1811. An important transaction
occurred on page 48 between Abiel Griswold and Moses

Daybook of Allyn M. Mather of Windsor, CT, 1830-1839 |
Hayden, Levi |
1830 |
M. Mather. |
