January 21 -
Fun for the Whole Family
Remember when winter meant
snowballs and hot chocolate rather than icy roads and
shoveling driveways? Recapture the magic of winter at the
Windsor Historical Society’s Winterfest on January 21,
2006. Compete in a snowman-making contest, create winter
crafts and see historic winter displays from 10:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. during this free event.
Winterfest offers indoor and
outdoor winter activities for all ages. Winter craft
stations feature six different crafts. Participants can
create a penguin pal, construct a pinecone bird feeder,
design a snowflake, learn to knit and make snowman snacks
that are almost too cute to eat. Visitors will also enjoy a
display of winter coats, cloaks and other winter clothing
from the Society’s textile collection as they learn how
Windsor kept warm in winters past.
For those willing to brave the
cold, a snowman-making contest will be held on the Society’s
front lawn. Registration for the contest begins at 11:00
a.m. and individuals or teams of adults, children or a
mixture of both have until 2:00 p.m. to complete their snow
creations. The Society will provide an assortment of
snowman-making supplies, but these items are first-come,
first served, participants are advised to bring some of
their own materials as well. Judging for prizes in several
categories will begin at 2:00 p.m. and winners will be
announced at 2:30 p.m. In case of warm weather, the contest
will take place indoors using craft materials.
Winterfest is offered in
conjunction with the Society’s exhibition, Celebrate:
Holidays in Windsor 1880-1910. Guest can view the
exhibition, which explores Windsor holidays during the
Victorian era through objects, photographs and holiday
images. Visitors are also invited to tour the Society’s
permanent gallery to learn about Windsor’s four centuries of
history.
All Winterfest activities are
free to the public and will be held at the Windsor
Historical Society. For driving directions or more
information, contact the Society at 860-688-3813, by e-mail
at info@windsorhistorical society.org, or online at
